Mounted Shooting Horse Network

For Cowboy Mounted Shooters Worldwide

I had lunch with a co-worker yesterday. He said he loved the old western movies and has quite a collection. He wants to know who was the best rider out of all the actors that were cowboys in the old movies. Any opinions?

..well he wasnt an actor first...but Ben Johnson was a great rider...watch him in the Old John Ford Films...
My first choice too. "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", He shows what a real rider can do. Outstanding!
Ben Johnson was the only person to win a world championship in rodeo and an oscar
Now there's an interesting Fact!
I am in agreement with Ben Johnson, he also did Roman riding in the movie
Ben Johnson by far, the roman riding was in Rio Grande wasn't it?
Rio Grande it was...with Harry Carey Jr. also riding and jumping Roman style...
Definitely Ben Johnson. First and foremost a cowboy. But a pretty darn good actor as well. I liked the ravine jump in "she Wore a Yellow Ribbon".
Ya, that was awsome!
Ben Johnson knew his way around a horse and probably could ride before he could stand! He was one of the original Turtles you know.

I like to watch Eastwood ride too, really sits down around a horse. He is very allergic to them and had quite a time becoming the horseman he is. I can appreciate that!
..you wont see him jumping Ravines or Roman riding these days...but Tommy Lee Jones has a pretty natural seat...(dont go there Marty :)
I vote for Yakima Canutt. There wouldn't have been many of the westerns without him.

He did real Roman riding as one of the chariot drivers in Ben Hur. LOL
