I met a barrel racer on another forum recently. She has been diagnosed with several ruptured disks in her back and told that if she wants to walk she must give up barrel racing and switch to gaited horses. I told her about mounted shooting and that I remembered a shooter with back problems that rides on a fur-covered bareback pad on paso finos. This lady is very interested in talking to this shooter and would like to get involved in mounted shooting to fill the void of barrel racing. Does anyone know the shooter I am referring too? I really need a name and some contact info.
Payson: I'm 62, a wounded veteran, had two MRIs on my back and been told by two nerosurgeons to stop riding horses. I still have lots of pain every night and take loretabs in order to sleep. I ride quarter horses because I feel they give me the best runs. I believe I will eventually have to give them up, but not just yet. And when I do ,I will probably quite riding altogether, 'cause the gaited horse just doesn't do it for me. I've ridden lots of them and trained many. I know there are fiercely loyal gaited horse people out there and I don't mean to offend any of them. This is simply how I feel.
I agree. Everyone on the forum told her to get a second opinion so hopefully she does. Payson, thank you for the number. I am going to pass it on to this young lady.
actually, i'm going to change my comment and say that whoever gave her that advice doesn't know much about ruptured disks, there long term prognosis and especially running barrels (or any other event)...unless of course your are getting dumped a lot or riding broncs....that doesn't help....
Mindy, I agree, that she should get another opinon. I have 2 herniated disc in my lower back and one ruptered somewhere north. this past spring, I was in a car wreck that dislocated my hips, they still hurt. I trailride a quarter horse and compete on a gaited horse that likes to go from a dead run to a dead stop in a nanosecond. I totally disagree with the Doctor.
But she will have a lot more fun shooting that bbl racing. I really dont understand the point of Bbl racing, it looks so boring
Hi Marty, I am a ex barrel racer that quit due to the same problem. My back wasn't as serious but did miss several summers of barrel racing. I have competed in Barrel Racing most of my life but will have to say if the word got out earlier about mounted shooting I would of quit barrel racing along time ago. Thank goodness I can handle the mounted shooting but I do have to be careful. so far two summers of shooting and didn't miss a lick. I met you in Sheriden. I was on the big black powerful horse. He's an awesome horse and I won't give him up no matter how much my back hurts!.
