The Heartland Peacemakers attend the Guns of August SASS shoot by the Big Irons this past weekend. It was a fabulous day filled with friends, challenging courses that needed horsemanship and quick shooting. Stages that included running through the woods, roping a steers head, jumping logs, carrying a mailbag pony express style, and hunting playing cards in the trees. Rick & Trish Deckena from the Indiana Regulators were in attendance along with Dan & Connie App from 1st Ohio and a handful of others that I met for the first time. Every member of the Peacemakers was in attendance and we had a cookout after the match was over, as well as ride our horses into Middletown to watch the ground shooters do their thing. Chiappa Firearms was the sponsor for the event and we had 16 riders show up for the fun. Almost all signed up on the spot to become SASS members and all agreed that it was a good shoot. Chiappa Firearms donated four .22 single action pistols as prizes and where given away on the poker draw stage. Trish Deckena, Brad Abrams, Connie App and Dottie Linville each won a firearm. Connie was lucky enough to draw two guns and she graciously put one back into the pot for another shooter to draw an ace.
The final top five winners of the day were: 1st Rick Deckena, 2nd Brad Abrams,3rd Trish Deckena 4th Penny Norton, & 5th Dottie Linville.
I was surprised to have shot so well because Saber & I hadn't shot since Cloverdale in November of 2008. It was nice to be able to set some time aside from school for yours truly and have a grand day with friends, horses, guns, and balloons. I am looking forward to Fall Break in October and having the chance to attend another shoot.
For those of you that would like to try SASS Mounted shooting, please check out our group on the Western Shooting Horse Forum under groups, We have events listed there and hopefully next year during Guns of August the Big Irons will host another mounted shoot. It is easy on the pocket book, fun to try new things, and the hospitality is the BEST!
I hope in a few days as my college schedule allows to post a few of the videos from the weekend on YouTube. Thank you to Brenda Polston for taking the videos with my camera so that I could shoot. Thank you also to Mikki Braid, Linda Abrams, and Brenda Polston for the wonderful breakfast and the great lunch afterwards.
