Thank you for helping me Range Master this weekend. I really appreciate it. As far as I know we did not have 1 protest and that is very good with 80 shooters at a State Championship.

Good luck at the worlds. My daughter shot off him last weekend at the SC State Shoot. She is a college now and had not been on him in a month. I guess I need to keep him so she will have something to ride. I won the level 2 at the SC shoot.

How are you doing. Are you going to the Worlds? How did you do at Murrfesboro?
Hey Eric, Right now technically there are 4 spots available, but I am waiting on 2 deposits. If I receive those, then there will be 2 spots still available. Let me know if you are interested. I took a half day clinic with Kenda and it helped me tremendously. She is an incredible teacher and doesn't hold anything back and really helps with the mental part of the game too.
I'm sure you'll be able to find us. Zombie and I just stand out I think. Just watch for the black and silver breast collar. That seems to be the identifier. Just look for the the handsome little horse with the breast collar. I'm usually on him 24/7. I might move up to a 3 this weekend. If I have a class. Marty's coming up here just to laugh at me. I was hoping on being a 2 when we come down for the Easterns, but it doesn't look possible. I have no doubt that we can compete as a 3 as long as we keep going how we are now. But, that's what the sport is about moving up, and maybe I can have some tougher competition now.
With Zombie I still have to swing wide around the barrel. He has a certain distance he likes to run from the rundown balloons, and I have to set him up with the barrel to get him set right for the rundown. If I turn to close to the barrel he ends up at the wrong distance. When this happens he stops dead in his tracks readjusts to his distance then takes off. But on normal horses the best way is just to be patient. Don't rush him into a dead run at the barrel. Just set up a barrel or even a bucket and gait for lope up to the turn a wide angle. When you are beside the barrel then que him to make a turn. Once he gets smoother and more confident and comfortable with this then speed him up to a canter. Don't forget to turn the barrel both directions. Or you'll only be training one side of the horse's brain. Once you can take a wide angle around the barrel at a pretty fast pace the horse should bring himself into the barrel. I'm not sure if you use a tie down or not, but I don't advise one on a Walker. When I first started I was told to put on him by Quarter Horse people, and it really took a lot of balance out of Zombie. Walkers have a total different bone and spine structure than your Quarter Horses. It is really uncomfortable and unbalancing for them to have their head tied down. This discomfort and lose of balance can hurt your maneuverability, and cause wide barrel turns. He could also be taking his wrong lead around the barrel and causing it to be wider. Zombie had a habit of changing lead half way through the barrel turn, which made it choppy and wider than usual. It's hard to tell. It could be many things causing it. If the horse doesn't respond to leg ques that can also cause a wide turn. Just pulling on the reins only turns the head and neck and the body just fallows latter. With leg ques you can move the whole horse at one time. You want to be able to control all parts of the horse. But I would suggest taking out the tie down first if you are using one. When I turn Zombie I check back just a little give him pressure on the outside leg lean into the turn then lay the rein over his neck. Don't limit yourself to barrels just find a rock or something on the ground and make the horse turn around it. Don't let the horse only associate the turn with the barrel. It really helps when you run a pattern. I can always turn Zombie away from the timer. It really helps having that tight turn back to the rundown. The video I posted of Zombie and I was our first year, and he hasn't got the maneuvering. If you've seen that, we have improved a lot since then. You can see how Zombie stops after the barrel. If you want I can give you my number so we can get in touch down at the Easterns. You should be able to find me, but I'm not staying at the arena for that week. Marty and I are going to do a demo at the Walker Celebration down there early in the week, and a few other shoots too.
It was a very long and strenuous process to get him to where he is now.(That's true with me too) I had to build up a lot of muscle in his rear end to help with coming off the barrels. There was a time last year when it looked like he really wasn't going to get it, and my parents were kind of giving up on him. But just when morale was low we went to the Indy State shoot and cleaned 'em up. It really helped having the bond and trust we have with each other. The first year, last year, was mostly about getting him bombproof to the balloons. All winter we worked on maneuvering. Neither of us knew the mechanics behind a barrel turn, but we quickly figured it out. His main thing I wanted to fix was his lead changes. Now I can make him change leads, turn, go, side pass, back, and stop with just changing my seat. I started this by just doing 8s and changing my seat and leaning directly in the center of the 8, and he picked up his leads perfect. Now I can make him take the wrong lead on purpose if I want. Hey, we're going down for the Easterns this year. If your going you'll have to meet him yourself. Zombie is a one of a kind horse. Just recently I've let new shooters try him, and it's remarkable how careful he is to be responsive and smooth. If you're going down for the Easterns We'll have to get in touch. And Marty's having the minion cookout too. It really was amazing the change we went through from trail horse to competition horse. Just don't give up, I'm glad I didn't. Talk to ya soon...:)
Talk about a close call! I called mom this morning and had her track it to see if it was out for delivery and she said it was so I was hoping the local UPS got it to you in time. Have a great shoot!
Eric call 308-254-7184 ASAP and talk to Shirley - she can see if UPS can get it to you by Friday - have her check from my location too as maybe it could get there by Friday if I get it mailed out today - problem is that it has to be shipped UPS ground - we had extra at Tunica that you could have gotten it there if we had known. Maybe there is a club near you that would have some you could get from them and then we could ship yours to them to replace what you need. Call Shirley now.
Thanks, Eric. I still can't believe it. I went into Tunica with a plan and it worked. I don't know if many would have given me a chance. As you know, it was a struggle to get my horse to go. Remember her rearing and going over on me at the Tennessee shoot?
I was trying to decide about coming to some of your shoots and wondered how for it was. I am another 2 hours on the other side of Arden. i have only went to the shoots in NC and SC. I would like to go every weekend but money and an old truck holds me back.
Hey, Hope you had a good trip back home. It was good to talk to you this weekend. This was my first shhot this year and the fever is back. I guess i will shoot at Clint's on april 11. Do you plan to come to that one?How far is the drive to Arden for you?
