I can really go with you on that Rob, since most people will try to make a shooting horse out of what they have at home. My point was if you don't already have a favorite mount at home and are looking for a serious competitor - look for a quarter ho…

Best logic I've heard yet, Jim. Could be you're right about that. Last year I was quizzing one of the smaller CMSA blank providers. He said he actually loads a .44 LC which ejects from the cylinders easier. Ever hear of that?

I'm with Marty on this. Unilke barrel horses which often become "automatics" shooting horses need to be very fexible. I don't think its a good idea for a shooting horse to begin "thinking" about the pattern. When they do, they tend to anticipate the…

Alexis, I like a lot of what you say. Yes, I'm probably guilty of not giving four-beaters a fair shake. That's because many of the ones brought to me are lateral gaited animals and suffer from an anotomical handicap in their rear hips. I once had a…

Do you really think that is a relevant question to our discussion? I remember learning in college that while debating, if your oponent trys to discredit what you say by attacking you personally, it's an effort to detract attention away from the subj…

I think we agree much more than we disagree, especially on the leg and cues thing. For instance, there was a very popular breeder in our area by the name of George Tackett. Mr. Tackett had been involved with public educaton for nearly 70 years. Not…

Alesis, you are making the classic mistake of prejudging people without even meeting them. The trainers I associate with, like myself, have been around horses for over 50 years. Everytime this discussion comes up about gaited vs quarter horse, those…

At our club shoot today this same subject came up. Not a sole disagreed that the quarter horse is the right tool for the job (a collection of professional trainers). And, we all agreed that you need to ride the horse you're in love with even if that…

Chereyl, I think you are confused, or maybe I am, about the discussion over the costs of an event. I wasn't suggesting anything about a "major" event. Your cost projections are pretty close, except: (Tractor fees normally are included with the aren…

I have three buddies, Lowell, Dr. Jim and Bill, all in their late 60's to early 70's who gave up their quarter horses because someone convinced them a gaited horse would give them a better trail ride (they don't shoot). Its been three years now and…

Paula, you mentioned overhead expenses; I don't thnk they are all that much, if any higher than a roedo or barrel racing event. THe ammo and balloons aren't all that expensive and the arena cost is about the same. Then, there's the balloons setter c…

Sometimes Frank, a person has to personally experience something before they understand it. In this case, its hard for people who have never lost the ability to lift an arm or can't walk without pain in the knees or can't turn at the waist any more…

Hey Tom! Hope you and family are doing great! Yes, dividing anything except zero makes it smaller. And, zero is just about what an old man can expect to get if he competes against a 20 year old. The only people I've found who disagree with this form…

The Fall Fest in Memphis was a blast

The results of the Fall Fest in Memphis, hosted by the Dixie Rough Riders are available. Tisha Deckena won the combined best time for Saturday and Sunday, while Thom Henning won his very first overall on Saturday. Thank all of you for attending and a special thanks goes out to Nodie Williams for those great big hugs!!! I'm glad you had a great time and look forward to seeing all of you in April for the Tune Up For Tunica match, which will be in the large indoor arena at Shelby Showplace.

So sorry to hear about the weather - but I know you will make an awesome event for everyone attending. . .Good Luck, talk to you soon and so glad that you and Karen all got together, also if you could ask her if she rec'd the DVD's from Nationals for the kids and their families, she may have an extra copy for you to help with your sponsors etc to show what you do.

Well I don't know how I did it, but I convinced my husband to change his deer hunting plans so we can go to the shoot on Saturday instead of Sunday... I can't wait! Thank you so much for all of the helpful information, I am looking forward to meeting you in person.

That sounds like so much fun, I wish I could come for the whole weekend, but right now it looks like I'll only be able to come on Sunday. Will the shooter's clinic happen on Sunday as well or is only Saturday?

Wow! Now I'm even more excited about this weekend, and I didn't know that was possible. Our farrier was right when he said we'd meet the nicest people if we got into this sport. Do you know Erven Duch? He told me about mounted shooting a long time ago but I was too into barrel racing to think about anything else at the time. Now I'm kicking myself for not listening!
What time do the festivities start on Sunday?

Hi, could you tell me how to buy advance tickets for the Fall Fest in Memphis? I know I read it somewhere but now I can't find it, sorry. I'm so excited, I've been waiting for awhile now to actually go and see a shoot in person...my poor husband has agreed to drive with me from Little Rock so I'll finally shut up about it...

Great photos from the shoot before Nationals and looking forward to 2010 in Memphis. Did you have a chance to reach Karen with Hearts Desire TRC?

Hey RD. I'm pretty sure you did get a check. Have they not sent it in the mail yet? I will have to get with Vickie (our treasurer) and check on that. Will let you know what I find out.
